    Abstract
The experiment was conducted at Bahadurpur village under the Laksmanshri union of Sadar upazila of Sunamganj district during November 2014 to May 2015 to find out the effect of variety and fertilizer on the yield of boro rice in haor area. Two varieties (BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan58) and three fertilizer treatments (Farmers’ practice, BARC recommendation guide based fertilizers and Soil test based fertilizers) were included in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with five farmer replications. Yield and yield contributing characters varied due to application of different fertilizer treatments. Plant height of BRRI dhan29 (89.60 cm) was significantly shorter than BRRI dhan58 (92.17 cm). Plant height also affected due to application of fertilizers. The longest plant (93.84 cm) was produced for application of soil test based fertilizers. At 75 days after transplanting (DAT), the highest number of tillers hill (18.72) and at harvest (17.77) was produced due to soil test based fertilizers. Higher number of effective tillers (15.98) was produced by BRRI dhan58. The highest number of tillers hill -1 (17.48) was produced due to application of soil test based fertilizers. Panicle length varied significantly due to variety, fertilizers and their interactions. Panicle length was longer in BRRI dhan29 (22.91 cm). The longest panicle (22.28 cm) was produced in the plots of BARC recommendation guide based fertilizers. Higher number of sterile spikelets panicle -1 -1 (156.57), 1000-grain weight (23.06 g), grain yield (9.21 t ha (33.09), number of grains panicle -1 -1 ) was produced by the BRRI dhan58 compared to BRRI dhan 29. The highest number of grains panicle ) and straw yield (12.08 t ha -1 (171.19) was recorded due to application of soil test based fertilizers. The highest 1000-grain weight (24.42 g), grain yield (9.79 t ha -1 ) and straw yield (12.52 t ha -1 -1 ) were obtained in BARC recommendation based fertilizers applied plots. The soil analysis showed that the nutrient contents in post harvest soils were higher compared to initial soil.
